About The Great Halifax Clothing Swap
In 2008, the founder of The Great Halifax Clothing Swap, Charlotte Genge, hosted her first clothing swap in her hometown of St. John’s, Newfoundland. A thriftaholic since birth, Charlotte has hosted numerous clothing swaps where thousands of swappers have hunted for new-to-them treasures.
Building on these original swaps, Charlotte hosted the first Great Halifax Clothing Swap in 2023. Now, Charlotte works with a committee to plan and grow the event, which is hosted twice a year in the spring and fall. The event seeks to provide an outlet for community members to express their love for clothing by connecting people through their mutual interest in fashion and the environment, while raising funds for charity. The ultimate goal of the swap is to provide access to affordable, high quality clothing, encourage a culture of reuse, make the circular economy accessible to the community, and create a channel to efficiently donate money and clothing to local charities.
